08 Jan Susan’s Sound Advice #101
A few years ago, when my car was brand new, I parked it in the garage, and when I came around the other side, I noticed that one of my kids left their bicycle in a precarious position. As if in slow motion, I tried to keep it from falling over, but couldn’t stop it. It fell right onto the side of my brand new car, making a dent. This immediately caused me distress, as my car was “flawed” now! I couldn’t wait to get it to the body shop so that it could be perfect again! I reacted poorly, I admit it. After all, the car still functioned as it was meant to. However, I couldn’t get that slight imperfection out of my mind. I decided to shift my thinking then and there. In reality, who really was going to notice that my car had a slight dent. It was still a beautiful car. How often do we spend our time focusing on the dents in our lives — those things that aren’t “perfect. ” How about when we focus on those people in our lives who aren’t “perfect”? How often do we get caught up in the flaws that we see? How often do we sabotage relationships because we do not look beyond “the dents”? Realize that we all have “dents”. There is no perfection. Acknowledge what is going right in your life…take your focus off the DENTS. If you do this, you will find peace and happiness.
