03 Feb Susan’s Sound Advice #1031
Many years ago, when we had a problem, an issue, an insecurity, we kept a diary, had a conversation with a close friend or spoke to a trusted therapist or Life Coach. Today, the line between sharing and oversharing has been blurred and our private lives are getting swapped out for public displays of information. I am here to warn you about something: You may have a ton of Facebook friends, but many of them are not your “friends”. It’s almost like putting out a public service announcement sharing your info with hundreds and even thousands of people. You may feel better after venting about your husband, your ex, your employee, your employer, . etc, but once that issue is resolved, everyone in your social network and in the huge world of the internet will still know all the intimate details you shared. The reason why reality television is so popular is because people love trainwrecks and drama queens/kings. It is entertaining to them and it makes them feel better about themselves. Social media is really no different. The next time you want to air your dirty laundry here, on Twitter or on Instagram, just remember that there is no “back” button or “delete'” button once it is published. It is forever embedded in internet history and in the minds of everyone who sees it. Here’s my advice: Keep a journal, talk to a trusted friend or relative, or better yet: I can recommend a great Life Coach or therapist! #susankorwin
