Susan’s Sound Advice #107

“Don’t be a bully”!…that’s what we hear over and over again. A bully’s intention is to chip away at our self-esteem by debasing us with words such as “ugly”, “stupid”, “loser”, etc. The more we listen to what the bully says, the more power they have. I grew up being bullied about my freckles and short curly hair. The words cut like a knife and I wanted to crawl into a hole. Later on, I too became a bully. To myself! I started using the same words as those who bullied me. “Your freckles are ugly”, “ugh, look at your hair”! The hurt felt the same. That’s what a bully wants. They want you to feel lousy because it gives them a power they don’t own. Negative self-talk is another form of “bullying”. Constantly telling yourself how bad you are and how you will never be a winner is your inner “bully” talking. Take away that power! Just as you would do with a schoolyard bully, stand up for yourself and say “I won’t be bullied”!!
Today, fill in the blank: “The thing I appreciate about myself at this very moment is__________”. Focus on that and let’s eradicate bullying!
