Susan’s Sound Advice #1084

#throwbackthursday …not that long ago. We were in Fort Tryon Park in the Cloisters. Adrian Alicea and I were doing a photoshoot. I was new at this. Adrian was not. He had me undressing and changing gowns in the middle of the park under a towel because there were no bathrooms nearby. I was scared, but I did it. He had me climb up and sit on the wall that faced the Henry Hudson Parkway. I was scared, but I did it. But…. when it came time to be hoisted many feet into the air to stand on the ledge of an abandoned house in the middle of the park, I was literally shaking. Robert Korwin, the stylist and Adrian all told me I could do it, and I was encouraged by their encouragement! So…. I did it and I am so proud to have this, among many other photos from that day. I always talk about integrity and how important it is. Another trait that is on my list is courage. We are ALL afraid. Fear does not discriminate. It is one of our inner enemies that wants to keep us small and safe. Every step and every achievement we have experienced so far involved some kind of risk. We felt fear, but we took action anyway. Courage is just that: Acknowledging the fear, but doing it anyway. There are small, every day steps we take that take courage. You might not have realized it, but listen to me: If you walked away from a toxic relationship and never looked back, even though you might have to go it alone, that took courage! If you ever stood up before an audience and made a speech, even though your hands were shaking and your palms were sweaty. . that took courage! If you ever drove your car in a big city even though it was overwhelming…that took courage. If you ever walked into a gym after years of inactivity…that took courage. If you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and decided that you will not hate yourself anymore…that took courage. Fear will always be there. It’s up to us to realize that it can’t control us. You are stronger than you think you are. Go ahead and face whatever fear it holding you back today. #susankorwin
