21 Sep Susan’s Sound Advice #1121
The World Health Organisation estimates that 121 million people suffer from depression worldwide. What I would like to do here is explain, to those who are lucky enough to have never suffered from this soul-sucking, debilitating “feeling”, what depression feels like. I beg any of you who have, or are currently suffering from depression, to post here what it feels like to you. I know how painful itis because I have been there myself. You are not alone and you have nothing to be ashamed of. Even though you feel like you can never recover, you will. Depression is a wave that comes and goes. It’s a dark cloud that may linger for a time, but then moves away, revealing a clear sky. For those who never suffered from this, perhaps it’s not possible for you to understand what it truly feels like to have depression unless you’ve suffered from it yourself, but, hopefully, if people post what it feels like, this should give you some awareness. At the least, the comments should help you realize that depression is far more severe than just having the blues or feeling sad. It can be so severe that it claims nearly a million lives a year worldwide. So, if you know someone who has it, don’t just tell them to pull themselves together or to simply get over it. Instead, listen to them, support them, and most importantly, be a friend. I will start the comment stream with what depression has felt like to me: #susankorwin
