Susan’s Sound Advice #1189

While practicing my dance steps in my red sparkly shoes, I am reminded of the ruby slippers that Dorothy wore in the classic film The Wizard of Oz. She was given those slippers by Glinda the Good Witch after winding up in a far away place due to a tornado that hit her home in Kansas. All she wants is to get back home, and she spends the entire movie on a quest to meet the Wizard who she believes is the only one with that power to make it happen. After much trial and tribulation, she does get to the Wizard, but he ultimately disappoints her, and yet again, she is stuck in the Land of Oz. Finally, Glinda tells her that she had the power all along to use her ruby slippers, but she didn’t tell her that at first. She knew that Dorothy wasn’t ready to hear it, and she probably wouldn’t have listened. She needed to go through what she did in order to realize her strength of character. Isn’t that true for all of us? Don’t we all possess ruby slippers? We all have the power in us to do incredible things. We can hear people tell us that, but in the end, it is really up to us to make it happen. No one else can do it. Sometimes that long, yellow brick road can seen endless, and it can seem that we are never going to get to our destination. But, we must realize that our personal journey is never a waste of time. It creates our character and it creates our strength. Our “ruby slippers” symbolize belief in our ourselves and that power is enormous! Never give up! #susankorwin
