It used to be very important to me that I dine in trendy, “seen and be seen” restaurants. I hate to admit it, but maybe it made me feel like I was “cool” if I was part of the crowd at a hip dining establishment. Slowly, through the years, that experience became very boring to me. When I was growing up in Queens, my biggest thrill was going to a coffee shop with my mom and her friends and orderingrice pudding or jello with whipped cream. The jello was formed into perfect cubes and so much fun to eat! What happened to those days of counter service and cozy booths? When did the dining experience, as we know it, change? This is my opinion, and you may not agree, but I would rather eat in a comfortable, fun environment with portions that are reasonable, than sitting in a cold atmosphere with servers offering you ground pepper and grated cheese over a tiny mound of food on a huge plate. I sincerely hope that the classic diners and family restaurants don’t close! I am sure my friends Sharon Barnett. Debbie Antoinette. Audra Baum. Lissette Cordova-Butkus and Sara Johnson Kaplan will agree with me. We have had some of the best lunches at the most “untrendy” places.
