I decided to write a letter to my younger self!
Dear Younger Me,
I am writing to you from the future, way in the future, and a place you can’t picture at the moment. I know it’s weird, but I’d like to share some wisdom I’ve learned now that will help you with some backward-looking perspective. Maybe by listening to me, I might be able to help you live a happier, more purposeful, more self-assured life. Please…just put aside your natural reaction to dis this moment and consider the words I am about to say.
I see you there, sitting on your bed, writing in your diary about what seems earthshaking at the moment. You write beautifully yet you don’t know it yet. All that matters right now to you is which boy you like and which boy likes you back. No matter what, please don’t stop writing because what you write today is going to be something you treasure later on when you are my age. Hey, you may even write a book one day! You are on the precipice of adulthood yet you are still vulnerable and every comment from others, whether positive or negative, will control your self-image. Please don’t listen to the opinion of others. You are a powerful, beautiful young woman. Don’t hide because you don’t look like everyone else. If someone doesn’t like you, just move on. Their opinions don’t count! Be kind to yourself and treasure the moments with mom and dad. It seems at your age that they will always be there, but they won’t. Embrace the moments that you have with them and tell them you love them often. You are going to miss them when they are gone. Don’t follow the crowd. You may think the cool kids know it all, but the cool kids today may turn into the not-so-cool kids when they are older, and what is popular to you now may not be popular tomorrow. Stay ahead of the game and trust your own inner voice. Don’t be a follower. Be a leader. If something doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. You have a strong and true inner voice. The biggest challenge you have is trusting that voice. Please know this too: You are perfect just the way you are. Ignore the criticism and bullying of others and walk your own path through life. You have what it takes. And oh, one more thing: At your age, you feel invincible and middle to old age seems very, very far in the future. Take it from me…. . life goes by in the blink of an eye. So, enjoy every single moment and don’t waste your time worrying about nonsense. None of these things will matter later on. I promise!
Love,
Much Older Me
