Susan’s Sound Advice #1203

Yesterday I stopped at a Walmart to pick up some toiletries. While on the checkout line, a guy asked me to hand him a Three Musketeers bar that was out of his reach. I did so, and with that, a whole conversation between us started. He asked me how I stayed in shape, we talked about diet and exercise, and I learned some things about him…a total stranger…in five minutes, than I have learned about many of my clients! It was such a sweet encounter, and when he finished checking out, he thanked me and went on his way. Most of us have a habit of avoiding people we don’t know, in spite of the fact that we are constantly surrounded by other people. We choose to be reclusive, looking at our phones instead of making eye contact. Humans are social creatures. To me, there is nothing more fascinating than learning about others. As a matter of fact, research shows that conversations with strangers actually combats feelings of depression and isolation. Don’t make the mistake of assuming other people wouldn’t enjoy speaking to you. Just a simple conversation could change your entire day for the better. I know mine was brightened! #susankorwin
