The human brain has a negativity bias. It constantly searches for bad news but often overlooks the good, This is probably why we watch the news more when there is a disaster than when things are going smoothly. We then ruminate about how horrible the world is and how it’s just a matter of time before we are all doomed. This tendency to fixate on potential problems can lead to anxiety and unhappiness, even when we are safe and life is good. To overcome this, we MUST remind ourselves to “notice the good”. Noticing the good means working hard to encourage our brain to appreciate the good things happening around us so that we can balance our all the problems and challenges that the brain naturally notices. Not only can this improve our life, but it can also help build psychological resources needed to be a calmer person. There is always the potential for a disaster, and yes, we have lived through many disasters, both on a global level and personal levels. But, take a look around and notice something that is beautiful. Notice something you love yet take for granted in your every day life. It’s right in front of your eyes if you train your brain to see it. #susankorwin
