Susan’s Sound Advice #1263

Today, we once again realize how fragile life is. How, in an instant, we can lose someone near and dear to our heart. On 9/11, we weren’t thinking about whether we could get a great seat at Fashion Week. We were worried about who lost their life and whether our loved ones were safe. We all lost something on September 11th, 2001. For some of us that loss hit close to home…a loved one, a co-worker, a job. But, even those of us who weren’t affected directly lost our sense of security. When the buildings crumbled, our foundations crumbled too. The unthinkable had happened. The world suddenly seemed much less predictable and much less safe. Now, 17 years later, we’ve gotten used to a new “normal” of intense scrutiny at airports and public events. But what about the kids? Kids are supposed to feel safe in their world, and I know that my kids were terribly shaken on that day and were afraid to go back to school. Getting out of bed in the morning and heading off to school and work has become an act of courage and faith. We know that bad things are likely to happen at any moment, but we live our lives anyway. This seventeen-year anniversary of 9/11 might be a good time to tell your children that, although there are some terrible people in this world, overall, most people are kind. Recommit yourself to putting YOUR values into action because children follow actions and not words. . Show kindness to others, be charitable. Most of all, show them that, even though this terrible act occurred, we, as a nation and as a society have grown stronger. We changed our priorities, we appreciate what we have, we have increased our sense of community, we’ve become more patriotic, and many of us have become more spiritually connected. The most powerful lesson we can teach our children is that strength and growth arise from sorrow and so does resiliency! #susankorwin
