Susan’s Sound Advice #127

It’s no secret that confidence is the key to success in life. When one is confident, they believe that they are capable of doing anything, which perpetuates more confidence. Basically, confidence isn’t about changing who you are, it’s about changing how you see yourself and how you present yourself to others. There are many threats to self-confidence. We each want to be the ideal person, so we struggle to be wealthy, attractive, smart, funny, and have a strong character. If we fall short in any of these areas, it wears away at our confidence. Don’t worry…there is nothing wrong with you…we all have the same thoughts. Always remember to make eye contact when speaking to another person. Someone who stares at the floor when spoken to projects the image of being meek. Also, when shaking hands, make sure your grip is strong; a limp handshake will also deliver the wrong message. I know of employers that, when interviewing potential employees, look for these traits as signs of whether they should be hired or not. So keep this in mind. It’s all a game…even if you don’t really believe it, you can “fake” an image of confidence. The more you fake it, the more you will eventually start believing that you have confidence.
