You often hear that character traits such as depression, negative attitude and pessimism are genetic, and since we inherited these traits, we are stuck with them. To some degree, genetics does play a role, but, I believe that these traits are “learned’ when we are constantly surrounded by people who act in a certain manner. I’ve seen whole families, including cousins, and aunts and uncles, who possess the same traits which were carried down by their grandparents. We can’t control who our parents are, but we can realize that these traits are a HABITand the chain can be broken just like any habit can be broken. By refocusing your natural tendency to lean toward the negative, you will eventually re-train your brain to see the positive. You can only have one thought in your head at one time. It can either raise you up or bring you down. Which do you prefer? You can’t change your past or the way you were brought up, but you can change who you spend your time with now. Make a list of the top 5 people you spend your time with. Next to their name, write either a P (for positive) or an N (for negative). Do they lift you up and encourage you or do they constantly whine and moan about everything and make you feel that nothing will ever work. Minimize your contact with the “N”s. Your mind is adaptable and it’s never too late to see the light instead of the darkness.
