Susan’s Sound Advice #229

How many of you have heard the expression “pick your battles”. If you really think about it, it takes a lot more energy fighting against something than avoiding the fight in the first place. One of these battles that can be avoided is the battle between you and your negative thoughts. You may imagine this dark thought, whatever it may be, as an enemy that needs to be forcibly removed from your mind. But, like a schoolyard bully, this thought will just keep coming back to torment you. Here’s another approach: Instead of shoving that thought out of your mind, acknowledge it’s presence, stay calm and confident, then tell the thought to move along. When the bully (your habit of negative thinking) comes back, look them straight in the eye and tell them in a peaceful way to leave your space. You really don’t need to get into a shoving match. Pick your battles. ©susankorwin
