Susan’s Sound Advice #247

When we compare ourselves to others, it’s always those who are either celebrities we see in magazines or the person who seems to have “it all”, i. e. the best body, the fanciest car and the most friends. We set unreasonable expectations by comparing ourselves and asking why we can’t be like that. We place a burden on ourselves by expecting another person’s mold of “perfection” to fit into our mold. If we don’t fit, we consider ourselves a failure and our negative self-talk becomes worse. There is nothing wrong with looking up to and aspiring to be like a positive role model. But, the problem lies in our emphasis on fitting into an unrealistic vision that is not us and will never be us. Let go of this perfect image and create visions of yourself as the best YOU, whether you are not perfectly proportioned, whether you don’t make a fortune of money, and whether you only have a few friends. When you become comfortable with who you are, your mood will improve, your relationships will improve, and don’t be surprised if people start wanting to be like you!© 2011 Susan Korwin
