12 Aug Susan’s Sound Advice #254
The other day I went to the cemetery to visit my parents. They both died within two years of each other, and these visits are always difficult. Every time I go, I stand over their graves and ponder how my mom and dad could possibly be here. I still can’t wrap my mind around it! These visits always leave me with a knot in my stomach for days after. Yesterday, I needed to unravel the knot. I thoughtof the musical numbers my dad played on the piano and performed in the theater; I looked around my home and saw all the beautiful artwork my mom created. I thought of how many countries they traveled to and all the photographs they took along the way. I could go on and on, but, what I realize is…they did what they loved and lived a full, happy life. I hope that my children will think of their parents in the same way and realize this life lesson: Life is so short. The past is gone and the future is here for us to create. The power is in this moment. In this moment, we have the choice to create painful memories from the past, or we can create a beautiful tomorrow. From now on, I will celebrate my parents for how they lived their life, not mourn their deaths. I will also be grateful for each and every day because we never know when it could be our last. © 2011 Susan Korwin
