22 Oct Susan’s Sound Advice #369
It is a sad fact that in today’s society, the demeaning, biting, sarcastic put-down has become an art form. I was reading an article about an actress who had a breakdown due to the nasty comments made about her weight by Perez Hilton, a celebrity blogger. On TV, radio and magazines, poking fun of others has become the norm. The sad thing is that we take it for granted. “Look how fat so and so hasbecome”, “How can he wear his hair that way?” “What was she thinking wearing that dress with those hips?”. And, the worst part is that we find humor in it. Here’s the deal: No one has the right to feel witty or cool at the expense of another human being’s feelings. Sadly, those in the public eye have to deal with this on a constant basis. We worship them, yet enjoy seeing them belittled. People are all the same, and they ALL have feelings that can be hurt. For those who have the need to put others down, ask yourself this: “Why do I do this? “Does it feel good to me to ruin someone’s day”? “How would I feel if the tables were turned”. Perhaps if we all decide to lift others up instead of knocking them down, maybe less people will feel the need to grab a gun and shoot in a last, desperate attempt at releasing their pent up rage.
