Susan’s Sound Advice #408

Oftentimes, our anxious thoughts multiply, causing a “runaway train” effect. One anxious thought leads to another and then another, until we are so panicky and frozen in fear that we can’t function. For instance, you are on the bus and you realize you will be a little late for work. Your first thought: “I am going to be in trouble for being late”. This then turns into, “I am definitely going to befired”, and then “I am such a loser, why didn’t I leave the house earlier”, etc. You must stop the runaway train in it’s tracks. Visualize a big red emergency brake, and every time you find your thoughts run away with themselves, push that brake and say “stop”! Destructive thinking is just like a runaway train. Just like the conductor who pulls the switch to stop a train, you have the power to pull the switch to halt your destructive thoughts. Try it. It is a powerful visualization.
