Susan’s Sound Advice #570

How many of us feel like unless we are in the “driver’s seat” (controlling everything), we can’t feel safe. Many of us need to know with 100% certainty what the future holds as a way to prevent surprises and control the outcome. One problem: It doesn’t work! Imagining all the ways that something can go wrong doesn’t make our lives any more predictable. Maybe worrying makes us feel safer, but that’s just an illusion. The only thing it WILL do is keep you from enjoying the present moment. Letting go or “going with the flow”, is not something we were taught on a daily basis. We are constantly told to “keep it together” and “hold on for dear life”. When we hold on too tight for fear of losing control, we only feel frustrated and tense. The biggest frustration in life is the gap between how we desire things to be and how they really are. Sometimes, we have to stop forcing things to be different when we can’t make it different. There are many things that we have control over…the obvious things like whom we choose to be friends with, what kind of car we drive, who we marry, etc. But, there are many circumstances that we just can’t control. In that case, the only control we have is how we react or respond to that particular circumstance. I recently heard a great analogy:
Think of your world as if it were one huge dance floor, and life as one beautiful, flowing dance. Each time the music changes, you effortlessly dance to a different beat. You flow with the music instead of against it. You don’t try and control the music! And it’s the constant changes in the music that make the dance of life so exciting and fun! Life would be very boring if we were to dance to the same tiresome tune our entire lives. This is how happy people live. They adapt to every circumstance thrown at them and release control. It sounds strange, but the more you “go with the flow”, the more “in control” you will feel. #dailyinspiration #susankorwin #lifecoach #author #simplestridestowardpositi vechange
