04 Nov Susan’s Sound Advice #63
Nothing chips away at our self-confidence more than the habit of scanning the people
around us to see how we compare. We look to see if someone else is better looking, taller,
or dressed better. And, if we do, we are devastated. It’s like riding a roller coaster. Perhaps
we are feeling pretty good about our appearance and then we find ourselves in the company of someone
with stunningly good looks. Suddenly we feel
ugly and want to disappear. Or perhaps we know
we have above-average intelligence, but we happen to
be at dinner with people who are even smarter.
Then we believe that everything we say is dumb. This is a habit that needs to stop. Remember this: We are absolutely unique.
We are the product of 23 chromosomes from our
mother and 23 chromosomes from our father, and
geneticists say that the odds of our parents having
another child like us are one in 10 to the
two-billionth power. Embrace your uniqueness and stop demeaning yourself with comparison to others.
