Ok…since it’s Fashion Week here in NYC, I want to take a moment to talk about the difference between “fashion” and “style”. We look at the clothing on the runways and we think , “I must wear that to be “in style”. But, that’s not true. If everyone wore the same outfit and the same accessories, how boring would life be? Fashion is the relationship to the external; It is about what’s out there, what they are showing in the stores, or in the magazines. It’s about the latest trend. Style, on the other hand, is the relationship to the internal. It’s about showing the world our identity, our perception of who we are and what represents our personality, our taste, our individuality. Fashion is all about the clothes; style is all about the person. I always say…just because someone doesn’t follow the latest “trend’, that doesn’t mean they are not stylish. Don’t blindly follow the masses. As Ralph Lauren once said, “Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever”.
