Susan’s Sound Advice #671

As most of you know, my middle son got married on Saturday up in Connecticut near his wife’s family home. You can imagine, as the mother of the groom, how many people were coming up to me during the event to introduce themselves and offer their congratulations. As soon as I would be conversing with someone, another would be waiting…I really had to hone my skill (which I talk about in my book) about staying present. If I wasn’t careful, I could have been easily distracted and run the risk of being viewed as rude, inconsiderate and disrespectful. Every day we interact with people. During these conversations, it is important that we be fully present and give people our undivided attention. Here’s two rules that I followed: I avoided looking over the other person’s shoulders to see who else was waiting or who was walking toward me. Have you ever been engaged in a conversation with someone who kept looking over your shoulder at other people? How did it make you feel? It takes a lot of self-control to not look around but it is important to give a person you are speaking with your complete attention. In my case, I couldn’t speak to each person introducing themselves for too long, but during that time, I smiled, I looked into their eyes, I repeated their name, and I thanked them sincerely for their kind wishes. When we intentionally give our full attention to those with whom we are interacting, we show through our actions that they are valued and important. The next time you are in a social situation, I encourage you to be intentional about giving your 100% attention to those you are speaking with. You will gain respect not only from others but from yourself. #dailyinspiration #susankorwin #lifecoach #author #simplestridestowardpositi vechange
