What happened to heroes? No, not the foot long sandwiches, but successful, honest people. Apparently they have been overtaken by the onslaught of train wrecks we allow into our brains and our lives. Watching footage of bad behavior on tv excites many, while hearing about a scientist or doctor who finds a cure for a disease…not so much. I think we find these people who break the law, fracture the English language, and show no values, entertaining, but maybe they also make us feel better about ourselves. I had a meeting with a producer recently regarding a possible show. I was told that reality TV has to go in a negative direction in order for it to take off. This is sad in my opinion. In the “old” days, we watched scripted shows that ended with the bad guy going to jail and we came away with the lesson that being a criminal is wrong. Now, it’s just the opposite. Stars of these shows get more airtime the worse they behave. We must stop celebrating and making heroes out of people who are going to jail for crimes they committed. This is reality: Being a fraud, a liar, a cheater and a thief is just plain wrong.
