16 Oct Susan’s Sound Advice #703
Between the news of new outbreaks of the #ebola virus and the beheadings and turmoil from #Isis , it’s no wonder that I am receiving more calls than ever from people who are having trouble coping with their worry and fear of the future. Telling yourself to stop worrying just doesn’t work. You can distract yourself or suppress anxious thoughts for a moment, but you can’t banish them for good. In fact, trying to do so often makes them stronger and more persistent. Try this one: Close your eyes and picture a pink elephant. Now, after you see it, stop thinking about it. For the next few minutes do not think about pink elephants. Bet you can’t! When you purposely try to forget about a thought, this emphasis actually makes it even more important. You need a different approach. Instead of stopping the anxious thought, focus on a solution. Focus on the things you have the power to change, rather than the circumstances beyond your control. Worry never solves anything, and things we tend to worry about usually never happen. If you need Life Coaching services, visit my website…. susankorwin. net.
