28 Oct Susan’s Sound Advice #714
I have many clients who say that FB is causing them to have low self-esteem. Today I decided to write about this: Listen, before you make yourself depressed because you are looking at everyone’s FB photos and statuses and thinking how dull your life is and how plain-looking you are compared to everyone else, here’s the truth: Facebook profiles are often a carefully constructed public image which reflects how you want others to see you, rather than who you actually are. Like some sort of endless loop, people portray themselves as constantly smiling, out on the town, on vacation or on the red carpet. Society encourages us to admire happy, affluent people, so it is little surprise people feel pressured to present themselves in their best light on their profiles. Pictures are vetted, carefully selected and sometimes even photoshopped. We meet people in person and sometimes can’t recognize them from their FB photos. Weaknesses, insecurities and imperfections are generally left out. Just keep this in mind.
