Recently, I saw a revival of one of my favorite plays, not only for its musical score and amazing choreography, but for the message it conveys. The Sharks and the Jets hated each other. They hated each other for no other reason except that they were different nationalities. Everything came to a head when Maria, the sister of the head of the Sharks, and Tony, the former leader and best friend of the head of the Jets, fell in love. This lead to a rumble during which both “leaders” ended up dead. Tony did not intend to kill Bernardo, but after seeing his best friend killed, his anger could not be controlled. This lead to a chain reaction of revenge, anger, and, in the end, Tony being killed. Maria, the love of his life, stands over his body while the two opposing sides stand and watch. She screams, “Are you happy now”?Stay back! . How do you fire this gun, Chino? Just by pulling this little trigger?! How many bullets are left, Chino?. In the end, the Sharks and the Jets come together, realizing that hatred only begets hatred. They both lost loved ones…Unfortunately, there are those people in the world today who lust for revenge, whose souls are boiling with the toxic and barbaric notion of bloodletting in the name of a perceived “just” grievance. An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind…. let’s remember that.
