Susan’s Sound Advice #846

This morning, as I sip my cup of coffee, I realize how much I look forward to, and enjoy it, each and every day. You may wonder where I am going with this, but here is what I am trying to say: We all want to be optimistic in life. But, optimism cannot be separated from gratitude. When we see someone who looks better, who is in better health, has more money, etc, we begin to lose our optimism. We find ourselves hoping so desperately for things we want in the future, that we stop taking time to appreciate the moment that we are in, and if the moment that we are in is challenging, it can be nearly impossible to find a silver lining. That is why it is so important to cultivate internal gratitude for every single moment in the day. I think about how grateful I am for my coffee, I think about how wonderful it is to look out my window, and even though it’s icy and cold, there is so much beauty in the white dusting of snow all around the trees. I sit in my chair and think how nice it is to be comfortable. Each day, I try to collect more and more “little” moments of enjoyment, pieces of happiness that join together to define the details of my life. The more you do this, the more natural it will become, and it will become second nature to be appreciative for the things we take for granted. Finding happiness in little moments can help us get through the rough patches in our lives. I know it is difficult to be grateful when things are going against us, but if we start to practice swimming in calm waters, then we are more likely to be able to find the strength to ride the riptide that may come in the future. So, whatever it is that brings you a moment of happiness, smile and say “thank you”! #susankorwin
