23 May Susan’s Sound Advice #918
Back in the late 60’s and early 70’s, I was a young teenager. We lived in an angry and anti-war nation during an historic and turbulent time. Musicians such as Bob Dylan wrote lyrics representing the times, “the times they are a changin'”, “there’s a battle outside and it’s ragin'”. Anti-war protests were everywhere, draft cards were burned, some escaped to Canada. I was young and I really was notthat political, but I knew I was against this war, and I wore my peace symbols and ripped jeans with pride. However, even back then, I would cringe when the guys who served were portrayed as baby killers, psychos, drug addicts and warmongers. These brave people were convenient scapegoats for an angry generation who probably now regret their words of hate. Fifty-thousand Americans died over there fighting for their country. They loved their country, and It’s no different than the men and women who have served and died in previous and current wars. Memorial Day is about honoring those who lost their lives serving their country. Let’s put our differences aside and give these people the respect they long-deserved. #susankorwin
