I received this dress as a gift. As you can see, it has the symbol of a “hamsa” hand, an old an still popular amulet for magical protection from the envious or “evil eye”. The word “hamsa” is known in the Jewish tradition as the protective hand of God, and in the Kabbalah school of thought, the five fingers of the hamsa represent the five books of the Torah. In other cultures, hamsa means “five”, and refers to the fingers on the hand. The term “evil eye” refers to the common belief grounded in folklore that ill-will and envious stares may bring bad luck and misfortune. Used as a symbol to ward off the evil eye, the hamsa hand has been universally embraced and adapted by Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and now by western culture. You can easily find them dangling from necklaces, bracelets, made from fused glass, laser cut metals and more. This dress incorporates another protective sign, fish. Since fish live under water, they are considered protected from the envious stares above. I love hamsa and evil eye jewelry. I am so happy to add this to to my spiritual collection. After all, a little protection never hurt anyone! #susankorwin
