I have many clients who are suffering from depression and severe anxiety. When I ask them if they have always had a tendency to feel sad. worthless and stressed, some say no. Those who haven’t always been pre-disposed to these feelings have one thing in common: They spend most of their time on social media. They do little else. They check in every five minutes to see if they missed anything, and their creativity and energy is drained. We know the effects that junk food has on our bodies. Too much sugar is toxic. Well, too much time spent passively viewing status updates is toxic to your health too. It constantly triggers the limbic system. spurring on the release of glucocorticoid (cortisol). This deregulates your immune system and inhibits the release of growth hormones. In other words, your body finds itself in a state of chronic stress. High glucocorticoid levels cause impaired digestion, lack of growth (cell, hair, bone), nervousness and susceptibility to infections. I have coached these clients and given them a timetable to spend on social media…. . 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the afternoon, and 15 minutes in the evening. I LOVE Facebook and can honestly say that it has changed my life for the better in many ways. I will never give it up, but use it in moderation. For those of you who find yourself more depressed and anxious after viewing the newsfeed all day, try my advice. Do something creative, meet real people in real situations. Don’t believe the hype. Not everyone’s lives are as they seem. #susankorwin
